Fun With Dog Breeds-Basset Hounds
Being a professional pet sitter in Gwinnett County, GA, I want to learn everything that I can possibly learn about every breed of pet that I may encounter. The other day, my friend Cynthia Block of Cynsationally Yours (beautiful, personalized gifts and more) and I were meeting so that I could pick up a gift that she made for my Mom. While we were enjoying our coffees, she told me that her Basset Hound, Herkimer was right down the street at the groomer. Well, I’ve been waiting to meet him, so I just had to go with her to pick him up! He is everything that is dreamy about a Basset and more! I got the idea about doing a series of blogs about different breeds of pets from Herkimer, so he is the star of this blog. The sites that I got the information from are Your Pure Bred Puppy , Ammidan and Dog Breed Info.
Basset Hounds
History and Hunting
Basset Hounds are a direct descendant of the Bloodhound and a very old breed. The Basset’s popularity began in Paris in 1863 when they were first presented at a dog show. The American Kennel Club recognized this long-eared darling in 1885. The name Basset comes from the word “bas,” meaning “low.”
It has been suggested that they may have originated from genetic dwarf dogs born in litters of different types of hunting dogs. Bassets are able to hunt in packs or alone and they are also good at hunting in the open or in the den. They are used to hunt hare, fox, opposum and pheasant.
Personality and Training
Basset Hounds are one of the most easy going and friendly of all breeds. Almost any Basset that you meet is going to be good-natured, outgoing, warm and peaceful with everyone- strangers, other pets, kids- name it! They are sweet, devoted, and naturally well-behaved.
As friendly and happy-go-lucky as a Basset may be, they are not the easiest dogs to train. They can be very stubborn with compliant, lenient owners and need a firm, confident and consistent owner who displays natural authority over the dog. House training is one of the most difficult things to teach this breed, but with positive reinforcement and patient gentle training, anything can be accomplished.
Hard to train, but also very food motivated, keep in mind that tricks for treats is something that a Basset loves to do. Even using treats, you still may expect to see very slow, thought out, deliberate responses from him. Also remember that your Basset has a very strong and unique sense of smell. If they catch an interesting scent, the “Come” command goes in one big ear and out the other. When training or playing outside, keep your Basset either in a fenced area or on a leash or you may not see him again.
Exercise and General Health
Despite short legs, Bassets can weigh between 45-65 pounds. Their average life span is 10-12 years. They need a moderate amount of daily exercise, even if it seems they are perfectly happy snoring away on the couch. Overweight Bassets have concurrent health problems that can be very painful for them including aggravated arthritis, back problems, or heart trouble. Exercise is as important to your dog as it is for you. A long daily walk (30 minutes or more) will be perfect to keep your dog mentally stable and a good healthy weight. Discourage any jumping or stress to the front legs and remember that Bassets are a hunting breed and it’s difficult to get their attention if they catch a scent they like. Keeping them on-leash or in a fence is crucial.
Bassets will run and play by the hour if allowed, but don’t leave them outside unattended. They tend to howl when bored and the neighbors may call the cops on you. Also keep in mind that those short legs won’t prevent them from counter surfing, so keep any food or other items as far back on the counter as possible.
These dogs shed quite a lot and it never really stops. They are also prone to be gassy and have a distinct “houndy” odor that some people find offensive. I can’t help but love that “houndy” smell, but that’s probably just my dog addiction. Bassets are also predisposed to bone and joint problems, ear problems and skin diseases.
Bassets are apt to otitis externa, (smelly yucky ears). This is easily prevented if ear cleaning is done regularly, such as when nails are clipped. Check with your veterinarian for an ear wash, or make a preventative cleaning mix of 50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% white vinegar. The Basset is also predisposed to Glaucoma.
Over feeding your Basset can cause too much weight on the legs and spine, leading to possible lameness and eventual paralysis. They are also prone to bloat, so feeding them 2 or 3 small meals instead of one large meal is highly recommended. If your Basset eats one big meal, keep an eye out for signs of bloat for the next few hours.~
So, what it comes down to is Bassets are family dogs with great dispositions, but can be very stubborn. If you have patience and you understand your dog’s breed and meet their exercise, diet and daily health care needs, you will have a wonderful family pet! If not, don’t blame the dog!

Rescued Puppy Mill Dogs Kept Cozy With ASPCA
The definition of puppy mill according to Wikipedia- A puppy mill, sometimes known as a puppy farm, is a commercial dog breeding facility that is operated with an emphasis upon profits above animal welfare and is often in substandard conditions regarding the well-being of dogs in their care. Similar types of operations exist for other animals commonly kept as pets or used as feed for other animals.
We’ve all seen the commercials showing these terribly sad, poor dogs and cats in cages with Sarah McLachlan as the spokes person. Most of us, anyway. Our hearts break when we see it and we know that this is happening all over America. What can we do about it? The easiest thing for you to do is do not buy a puppy until extensive research has been done on the breeder. There are a lot of puppy “stores” that will tell you that they do not buy from puppy mills, but ask them for the address of the puppy’s breeder and go there. You need to see the surroundings of the puppy and meet the puppy’s parents. Any breeder that can’t allow this or any puppy “store” that cannot give you an address has something very shady is going on.
There are so many wonderful, adoptable dogs that need a home. My Mom, Vicki Lunceford adopted a Lhasa Apso from Atlanta Pet Rescue, Sassy, and she is a puppy mill rescue. She’s coming around very well, but she has a lot of issues that my Mom has had to find answers to. Before rescued, puppy mill dogs are kept in small cages and never let out, sometimes more than one per cage. This makes it more difficult to teach house training and leash training, among other learned behaviors. Patience and understanding are required to adopt one of these dogs, but to see the pride on one of these dogs’ little faces when something finally clicks is priceless.
Below is a story that I found on the ASPCA site about a few rescued pups that need a home and some that have been adopted.
The Lucky 34—Meet Our Puppy Mill Survivors
On February 7, 34 dogs who once endured terrible living conditions in a notorious puppy mill operation in Holly Springs, MS, were transported to the Big Apple in search of new forever homes. The dogs, many of whom are small breeds, are not the cute, cuddly pups often displayed in pet shop windows, but mothers and fathers who were used as breeding stock at the puppy mill.
These special pups have spent their entire lives confined to tiny wire cages, which inhibit natural behaviors like running, playing and even stretching. Trading the stark environment of a puppy mill for novel sights, sounds and sensations can be tremendously overwhelming for these sheltered animals. Simple behaviors like potty training, sitting on laps or even walking on a leash are challenging activities. Ample recovery time helps, so too does the dedication of a very special adopter—one who will provide lots of love and unconditional acceptance.
Think you have what it takes to care for one of these special pooches? Here are a few of the extraordinary puppy mill survivors who are just waiting for laps to call their own.
Clementine
Check out teeny Clementine. She’s a bit of a nervous Nelly, but who can blame a girl? Clem needs an experienced adopter—are you that pro? If you can help our little Miss Sunshine come out of her shell and experience the world with freedom and love, you may be the perfect pet parent for her.
Lugini
Lugini is a sweet and shy Chihuahua boy with lots of love to give. He just needs a little time to get comfy—after all, he’s seen a lot in his short life. Like most puppy mill survivors, Lugini is a high flight risk as he startles easily and may bolt. It is wise to always keep him on a leash or enjoy playtime in a fenced-in yard. While a true work in progress, this special munchkin is bound to make you laugh and smile.
For more information about adopting one of these dogs, please visit our Adoption Center online and for expert tips on living with a puppy mill dog, visit ASPCA.org.
JUST ADOPTED!
Buffy
Buffy is a sensitive girl from Mississippi—a true diamond in the rough. A sweet little Rat Terrier, Buffy is healthy physically but fairly damaged emotionally. She lived for years in a mill churning out puppies for money. While she needs a little extra time to warm up to strangers, Buffy’s true colors were recently noticed by a visitor to our Adoption Center. We are happy to report this tiny pup is happily settling in to her new forever home!
Betty and Wilma
These sugary-sweet sisters endured some rough times at the Mississippi puppy mill before landing in the Big Apple—and their lack of experience shows. Both tend to lag a bit behind on walks—like most mill dogs, they have never experienced walking on a leash. And neither of the girls are potty trained—also common with mill dogs who have been forced to relieve themselves in their cages for years. Despite these minor setbacks, these two sisters wowed potential adopters with their sweet-as-pie kisses and have recently been adopted!
We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form. ~William Ralph Inge, Outspoken Essays, 1922
Finding Out About Ferrets
Being a professional pet sitter and a passionate animal junkie, I started realizing that I don’t know a whole lot about ferrets. I got a call from a very nice lady who would like to meet me to chat about sitting for her two ferrets while she’s away. I’ve taken care of friends’ ferrets before and they have had a presence in my life, but how much did I really know about ferrets? A little, but not enough in my opinion! I went searching online and asked my fellow pet sitters and found out a lot of really interesting things and also reinforced some of the stuff that I already knew. My sources for these facts include: Wikipedia, Ferret Central, and Jennifer Perry of Pet Tech and Safe at Home Pet Sitting.

Introduction
Ferrets are domestic mammals and are in the weasel family. They are very closely related to the polecat, but it is not clear whether they are a domesticated form of the European polecat, the Steppe Polecat, or a hybrid of the two. The ferret’s ancestor, the polecat, is a very solitary creature. Ferrets, however, live happily in social groups.
The average length of ferrets is 20 inches, this is including a 5 inch tail. The average weight is 1.5-4 pounds. Males are substantially larger than females. The average natural lifespan of ferrets is 7 to 10 years.
Eating Habits and Feeding
Ferrets are obligate carnivores. An obligate carnivore is an animal that by its genetic makeup must eat the tissue of other animals in order to thrive. The natural diet of their wild ancestors consisted of whole small prey, i.e. meat, organs, bones, skin and feathers. There is a lot of debate over what to feed pet ferrets. The key ingredient in any food for ferrets are fat and protein, specifically animal protein, since ferrets’ short digestive cycles prevent them from getting enough nutrition from vegetable proteins. The food needs to have 30-35% protein and 15-20% fat and animal protein should be the first listed ingredient. Raw diets are becoming more and more popular for pet ferrets, but you should know that most ferrets don’t like fish. Chicken, turkey, beef and lamb are all great. Unless your ferret is overweight, keep his bowl full and let him eat as much as he wants.
Precautions
If you’ve ever gotten the pleasure of hanging out with a ferret, you already know that they are trouble makers and quite mischievous. They love working their way into small holes, even as small as 2×2 inches. This can lead to many serious situations- the hole could lead the ferret outside, to wires, inside the refrigerator to the wires…you get the point. The best way to prevent this, is to put yourself on their level, crawl on your belly looking for holes near the floor, under cabinets, especially in the kitchen and laundry area.
They can also open drawers and cabinets, leading to household cleaners (which some will drink) and other dangers. Some of the many problems for ferrets chewing mouths are sponges, erasers, shoe insoles, foam ear plugs, Silly Putty, foam rubber, Styrofoam, insulation, rubber door stoppers, and anything else springy or spongy (couches that they could bite their way into, etc). They love chewing on such things and swallowed bits can cause intestinal blockage. Also, some ferrets like to lick soap, so keep that out of reach. Ferrets are excellent climbers and jumpers, so keep in mind that they can get to places you wouldn’t think that they could! Put fragile items away and remove anything spongy out of scope. Using liberal applications of Bitter Apple can help deter your pet from chewing on things that you don’t want her to.
Recliners and sofa beds are a real danger for these cute little trouble makers. Many get crushed yearly in the springs and levers. They are almost impossible to ferret proof, so the best thing to do is to put your recliner or sofa bed in a room that the ferrets aren’t allowed in. Even regular couches and beds can be dangerous if the ferret digs or crawls his way into the springs or stuffing.
Be very alert around full tubs, buckets of water, the toilet, etc. when you have your ferret out of her enclosure, as these all pose drowning threats. Also, paper towel and toilet paper rolls can cause suffocation or choking if the ferret gets his head stuck inside. If you allow your pet to play in plastic bags, as they SO love to do, remove the handles and cut a slit in the bag.
Ferrets have several distinct health problem. Among the most common are cancers affecting the adrenal glands, pancreas, and lymphatic system. Viral diseases include canine distemper and influenza. Ferrets are able to transfer influenza to us, and we to them. They can also suffer from dental problems and hairballs.
For bedding, don’t use cedar lining, as it has been associated with allergies and respiratory problems in various animals, including humans. Also, pine and other woods cause a lot of dust. Wood shavings are completely unnecessary, as a ferret is more like a cat than a hamster. The really enjoy snuggling up in a nice, clean towel or an old t-shirt placed in a box or basket for sleeping.
Fun Ferret Facts
- It’s unclear exactly how long the ferret has been domesticated, but it’s likely to have been for at least 2,500 year
- In some parts of the world, ferrets are still used for rabbit hunting
- Ferrets spend 14-18 hours per day asleep and are most active around the hours of dusk and dawn
- When excited, ferrets may perform a routine commonly referred to as the “weasel dance,” a frenzied series of sideways hops which is often accompanied by soft clucking noises
- They love to steal and hide anything that is shiny
- Ferrets are the third most popular pet in the United States behind dogs and cats
- Ferrets don’t have an appendix

Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: “Because the animals are like us.” Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is: “Because the animals are not like us.” Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction. ~Charles R. Caring For Birds and Other Small Animals in an Emergency
A couple of weeks ago, I attended my Georgia Network of Professional Pet Sitters monthly meeting, where Beth Fasnacht of Pet Watch, Inc. gave us an excellent presentation on disaster emergency preparation. Here is a little more of what I learned.
Caring For Birds in an Emergency
Birds should be transported in a secure travel cage or carrier. In cold weather, wrap a blanket over the carrier and warm up the car before placing the birds inside. During warm weather, carry a plant mister to mist the bird’s feathers periodically. Do not put water inside the carrier during transport.
- Provide a few slices of fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content
- Have a photo for identification and leg bands
- If the carrier does not have a perch, line it with paper towels and change them frequently
- Try to keep the carrier in a quiet area. Do not let the birds out of the cage or carrier during an emergency
- When transporting house lizards, follow the same directions as for birds
What About Other Pets?
Reptiles
Snakes can be transported in a pillowcase, but they must be transferred to more secure housing when they reach the evacuation site.
If the snake requires frequent feedings, carry food with you.
Take a water bowl large enough for soaking as well as a heating pad.
Pocket Pets
Small mammals (hamsters, gerbils, etc.) should be transported in secure carriers suitable for maintaining the animals while at the shelter. Take bedding materials, food bowls, and water bottles.
Life is life–whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man’s own advantage.

Pets and Disasters: Getting Prepared
I want to thank Beth Fasnacht at Pet Watch, Inc., who is in my networking group, Georgia Network of Professional Pet Sitters for providing me with this crucial information during our February meeting. I learned a lot from that meeting and will be sharing it all in previous, present and future blogs.
Pets and Disasters: Getting Prepared
Our pets enrich our lives in more ways than we can count. In turn, they depend on us for their safety and well being. In this article, you are going to learn how to be prepared with a Disaster Plan to protect you, your family, and your pet family as well.
Did you know that the Humane Society of the United States is working with the American Red Cross on providing shelter and help to victims and their pets in disasters? Do we have any of these shelters in our areas? Do you have an emergency disaster system in place for you and your family?
One way the HSUS is working with people is teaching them how to prepare for a disaster. This article will hopefully help you if a disaster strikes your home and give you some interesting facts about what is being done to help people find shelter in a disaster.
Be Prepared With a Disaster Plan
The best way to protect your family and pets is to have a disaster plan in place. This includes all supplies, and they need to be ready to take out the door and/or use if a disaster strikes.
Being prepared can save their lives and yours!
Different disasters require different responses. However, whether the disaster is a hurricane or a hazardous spill, you may have to evacuate your home. If you must evacuate, the most important thing you can do to protect your pets is to evacuate them, too. Leaving pets behind, even if you try to create a safe place for them, is likely to result in their being injured, lost or killed. Prepare now for the day when you and your pets may have to leave your home.
Have a Safe Place to Take Them
Red Cross Shelters cannot accept pets because of states’ health and safety regulations and other considerations. Service animals that assist with disabilities are the only animals allowed in the Red Cross Shelters. It may be difficult, if not impossible, to find shelter for your animals in the midst of a disaster, so plan ahead. Do not wait until disaster strikes to do your research.
- Contact hotels and motels outside your immediate area to check policies on accepting pets and restriction on number, size, and species. Ask if “no pets” policies could be waived in an emergency. Keep a list of “pet friendly” places, including phone numbers, with other disaster information and supplies. If you have notice of an impending disaster, call ahead for reservations.
- Ask friends, relatives, or others outside the affected area whether they could shelter your animals on a temporary basis. If you have more than one pet, they may be more comfortable if kept together, but be prepared to house them separately.
- Prepare a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians who could shelter animals in an emergency; include 24-hour phone numbers.
- Ask your local animal shelter if they provide emergency shelter or foster care for pets in a disaster. Animal shelters may be overburdened caring for the animals they already have, as well as those displaced by a disaster, so this should be your last resort. If your local area does not have an emergency shelter, maybe work with the Emergency Management Team in your area to set one up.
“True benevolence or compassion, extends itself through the whole of existence and sympathizes with the distress of every creature capable of sensation.”

ASPCA Leads Second Dog Fighting Bust in Georgia
It saddens our hearts to hear about dog fighting and any type of cruelty. I just read today about a second dog fighting ring in Georgia being busted with the assistance of the ASPCA. I want to share the story, it’s one of the milder ones. Please help to spread the word, and if you know or suspect someone of any type of cruelty, please report it.
ASPCA Leads Second Dog Fighting Bust in Georgia
For the second time in a week, the ASPCA helped respond to a suspected dog fighting ring in rural Georgia. On February 21, five days after the ASPCA rescued 26 alleged fighting dogs left to die in Sandersville, GA; the Washington County Sheriff’s Department received a second tip.
The anonymous call led deputies to a property in the East Sandersville section of Washington County, GA. When the Washington County Sheriff’s Department arrived, two dogs were in the act of fighting and three men fled the scene. ASPCA Investigators helped secure the scene and found nine other dogs on the property. Eight of the dogs found were severely underweight and some of the dogs were suffering from various skin ailments.
On February 16, the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team along with Washington County officials rescued 24 dogs and recovered the remains of 6 others and identified a total of over two dozen grave sites. While the two cases are very similar in nature, authorities believe they are unrelated.
“The second tip came in because the witness had seen the first case on television news reports,” says ASPCA Senior Vice President of Anti-Cruelty, Matt Bershadker. “This just proves the importance of reporting cruelty and the fact that it inspires others to take action as well.”
Authorities have two suspects in custody in conjunction with the East Sandersville case. Other arrests and animal cruelty charges are anticipated. The dogs from East Sandersville have since joined the two dozen others at an emergency shelter, where officials from the ASPCA and United Animal Nations are caring for their immediate needs. The dogs from both cases are being provided with all necessary medical care and are in the process of undergoing behavioral assessments.
For the latest information about the rescued dogs or for information on how you can report cruelty, please visit ASPCA.org.
From beasts we scorn as soulless,
In forest, field and den,
The cry goes up to witness
The soullessness of men.
